After World War II, most of German industry was in ruins, and the DKW motorcycle factory located in Zschopau, now in the Russian (or Eastern) sector, had been badly damaged.  A new DKW factory was built at Ingolstadt in the Western sector of Germany, while the factory in Zschopau became the home of a new motorcycle company, VEB Motorradwerk Zschopau, or MZ.

The company started producing two-stroke street motorcycles under the name IFA in 1946. In 1950, an IFA 125cc road racer was created, based on the company’s piston-port streetbike…

Much has been written about Ernst Degner’s defection to the West in 1961, but behind the Iron Curtain, work at the MZ race shop didn’t stop with his departure. The little company, with not a lot of resources but a lot of imagination, took podiums at the Isle of Man and challenged for World Championships.
