Former AMA Pro, World Superbike, and 500cc Grand Prix racer Anthony Gobert has died at age 48. The talented star was brilliant on a racebike and a fan favorite but struggled with alcohol and drug addiction throughout his career. Survivors include his mother (and manager) Suzanne and younger brothers Aaron and Alex.

Godspeed Anthony Gobert.

Suzanne Gobert posted the following earlier Wednesday on social media:

“My heart is breaking as I write this as my first born beautiful son Anthony has passed late this afternoon [Australian time] I loved him from the moment he was born until the day I die. At times he was challenging, to say the least, but he always had a kind heart and cared for everyone. Sadly, he was a victim of addiction, which runs deeply in our families. He tried many times to get better, but he couldn’t quite make it. I am so proud of him and thank all those good people who added to his life. You know who you are.”

Alex Gobert posted the following on his social media:

My eldest brother was my first proper hero. In a lot of ways, his influence on my childhood and our connection to the sport still stands strong to this day and I genuinely treasure those early memories. I always will.

Hopefully, especially for his sake, we can all celebrate the better times in his life, the moments beyond the immense struggles and also take the time to recognise once again that both addiction and mental health battles are very real, very difficult obstacles to overcome.

Thank you to all who have extended their thoughts and shared memories.

John Owens’ & Kevin Cameron’s   New Book, “Superbike: An Illustrated History”

This great book chronicles the 1970s transition from the twin-cylinder BMWs, Ducatis, and Moto Guzzis and the wobbling and weaving first-generation Japanese four-cylinders to a rapidly improving wave of race-worthy machines that led to the sportbike revolution. Owens shot the black-and-white photographs published in this beautifully designed and produced 192-page hardcover book at five of the tracks that dotted the U.S. motorcycle road racing landscape at the time: Daytona, Bryar (a.k.a. Loudon), Laguna Seca, Pocono, and Road America.

Eddie Lawson, Wayne Rainey and Freddie Spencer—three Americans who went on to win a combined 10 250cc and 500cc Grand Prix World Championship—figured prominently in this AMA Superbike era. Throughout the book, Cameron and Owens provide insights and images of riders, crew members, and machines. “The desire to go fast, brake, turn and accelerate isn’t that complicated,” Cameron writes in the opening pages. “In any given era, the dominant rider is the person who has most imaginatively exploited the new possibilities presented by constantly evolving chassis, suspension and tires.”

Available for $75 from MotoRacing Books and Superbikebook.com, and more information is available from  superbikebook@gmail.com .

Rancho Cucamonga, CA: Dunlop’s all-new Sportmax Slick doesn’t just talk a big game, it proves its performance in lap times! At the Dunlop Proving Grounds, in Huntsville, Alabama, Dunlop’s Motorcycle Test Engineer Taylor Knapp averaged almost a whole second improvement on the Sportmax Slick over the KR451. More impressive than that, countless lap and class records have been demolished with the new and improved tire during the 2023 MotoAmerica series at nine out of ten tracks in multiple classes!

The Sportmax Slick had lap records broken at all the MotoAmerica tracks in 2023 except at Pittsburgh International Race Complex (due to the new chicane)

The new Sportmax Slick, Dunlop’s next generation of road race tires with more grip and improved predictability is available in 17”, 12” and 10” sizes. The Sportmax Slicks have been updated with new profiles, compounds, and constructions to make them the most advanced road racing tires Dunlop has ever produced! Riders will instantly feel a greater level of confidence with the new Sportmax Slick. The new Dunlop Sportmax Slick was initially only available for use in MotoAmerica but is now available for club racers and track day riders as well.

The Sportmax Slicks were developed over the last 3 years, with internal testing being done at Dunlop’s Proving Grounds in Huntsville, Alabama by Taylor Knapp and external testing being done by top MotoAmerica stars such as multi-time MotoAmerica Superbike champion Jake Gagne, plus Richie Escalante, PJ Jacobsen, Cam Petersen, Josh Herrin, Mathew Scholtz and Josh Hayes, the all-time winningest road racer in AMA history, just to name a few.

The front profile of the Sportmax Slick was pulled up from Dunlop’s Sportmax Q5 development and features a taller and narrower profile. This new profile results in a tire that has improved trail braking feedback, more precise turn-in, greater high-speed mid-corner stability, increased compliance, and a larger footprint at camber.

The rear tire also features a redesigned profile that is taller and generates increased lateral grip, acceleration grip and improved compliance, due to a larger, more evenly distributed footprint at all angles. This new design has led to a rear tire that is more predictable in every area of the corner from turn-in to acceleration at corner exit.

Dunlop’s 17” Sportmax Slicks, developed by Dunlop’s Advanced Research Team (D.A.R.T), replaces the industry standard KR448 and KR451 range of slicks and are the new Official Tires of the MotoAmerica series. Dunlop and MotoAmerica recently renewed their contract, allowing Dunlop to remain the official tire supplier of MotoAmerica through 2025, continuing the partnership since 2015.

The Sportmax Slick updates include:

  • Revised compounds and naming structures to be more intuitive: R0 (softest) to R8 (most durable). The low numbers for easier or hotter tracks and the higher numbers for more abrasive or cold tracks
  • New sidewall design with taller sidewalls provides more cushion and bump absorption for improved traction even on the bumpiest of tracks.
  • Optimized rear NTEC which combines the benefits of compliant cut-breaker construction with stiffer, continuously wound aramid-fiber, and Jointless Band (JLB) construction for maximum feel and stability when leaned over for more support when on the gas.
  • New taller profile, which leads to better contact patch. More predictable change in contact patch area (grip) while adding lean angle or taking lean angle away and driving out of the corner.

Multiple compounds are offered for the front and rear tires, but the R8 compound is exclusive to the rear tires only.

Due to the Sportmax Slicks being race tires, tire warmers are highly recommended for all compounds.

The new Sportmax Slick tires are available now from dunlopracing.com or from your local Dunlop trackside vendor.

Pirelli and Stefano Mesa Set New Motorcycle Track Record at Daytona International Speedway

With the New Lap Record of 1:44.046 Mesa Goes a Full Second and a Half Quicker Aboard his BMW M 1000 RR, Equipped with Pirelli DIABLO Superbike Slick Tires

ATLANTA (October 24, 2023) – Pirelli congratulates Stefano Mesa on setting the new absolute motorcycle track record at Daytona International Speedway during last weekend’s American Superbike Racing Association (ASRA) and Championship Cup Series (CCS) event. Mesa’s incredible performance saw him topple the previous track record by 1.5 seconds aboard his Tytlers Racing BMW M 1000 RR machine, equipped with Pirelli DIABLO Superbike slick tires.

“What a weekend at Daytona,” said Mesa. “I did not expect to do what we did this weekend by lowering the lap time a full second and a half. Pirelli has done its homework when it comes to racing at the legendary speedway, and that has shown with its success over the past several years here. The level of comfort that I had this weekend was something I had not felt in quite some time. Thank you, Pirelli!”

The new lap record of 1:44.046 easily surpassed the previous best time of 1:45.538 and relied on the performance of Pirelli’s DIABLO Superbike 120/70 R17 SC2 front and 200/65 R17 development “Daytona spec” rear tires.

“Time and time again, Stefano raises the bar,” said Oscar Solis, Senior Racing Manager, Pirelli. “Track records are typically broken by small margins, especially at a historic track like Daytona, so what Stefano did this weekend was special. Everyone at Pirelli has worked incredibly hard to find the perfect setup, and that really showed today. We can’t wait to carry this momentum into the Daytona 200.”

The weekend served as an early test and preparation for the iconic 2024 Daytona 200, with Mesa and fellow Pirelli rider Shane Narbonne also setting the fastest 600cc times of the weekend with a 1:49.227 and 1:49.282, respectively.

October 24, 2023 | Boardman, OH | BRL Newswire:  Bagger Racing League’s Fall Brawl in Daytona was an absolute barn burner!  The thrilling race saw Arnie Wells of Team SLYFOX Performance and Suburban Harley-Davidson take the #1 plate with Bryan Shields and Craig Braymiller rounding out the podium. The American Sportbike Racing Association (ASRA) hosted the special AMA Championship class at the iconic Daytona International Speedway on October 20th and 21st.

The Harley-Davidson-dominated class fielded 11 racers who were ready to bring an intense bagger brawl to the historic high banks of Daytona and it didn’t disappoint.  Wells started out fast and secured the lead on Bryan Shields out of the gate.  Yet Bryan put on a show and battled back to make a pass going into turn one on the final lap. Arnie, knowing it was now or never, put his head down and battled back to make the pass by Bryan on the last lap, the last bank to take the win!

“I’m so proud of Arnie and our entire team,” said Joe Houpt, team owner of Suburban Harley-Davidson. “We are grateful to both American Motorcycle Association and Bagger Racing League to offer an opportunity to race for a historic #1 plate at the iconic Daytona International Speedway. Special thanks to Alex at SLYFOX Performance as well as the rest of our sponsors NAMZ Custom Cycle, Alloy Art, Hayes, Performance Machine, Regina Chain, G2, BST, Shock’s Auto Body, Midwestern Anodizing.”

The next stop for the Bagger Racing League is the championship race at Willow Springs International Raceway, Nov 18th and 19th. Fans can purchase tickets, camping and VIP upgrades online at www.baggerracingleague.com.  Fans can also be entered to win a one of a kind 2023 race series poster signed by all the racers by subscribing to BRL’s official newsletter.

“We are excited to see what our teams and racers bring to our championship race in Willow Springs,” said Rob Buydos, Bagger Racing League’s founder and president.  “With the great success of the 2023 BRL Fall Brawl in Daytona, fans of the BRL are going to be treated to epic amounts of championship racing action.”
